Rescue story

In March 2025, WEACT rushed out before dawn after hearing that wildfires were rapidly spreading in the Gyeongnam–Sancheong area. With trucks loaded with water, food, and rescue equipment, the team headed straight into the fire zone. The fires quickly spread across Uiseong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Andong. Some dogs managed to escape, but many were tied up and couldn’t run away. Those dogs were trapped in the flames, unable to move even a single step. Some dogs collapsed after suffering severe burns. Others barely survived, escaping death by just moments, but still endured immense pain. That’s where we met WEACT Haemil.

Personality

Haemil is a smiling angel whose name comes from the Korean word meaning “a sky that has cleared after rain.” When Haemil was rescued, everything around her had burned to the ground, and she had suffered severe burns on her hips, thighs, and paw pads, yet she greeted rescuers like a miracle, wagging her tail with a bright, radiant smile. Haemil loves people and is a curious, affectionate sweetheart. Haemil is incredibly expressive and honest about her feelings, and her sharp little mind never fails to surprise everyone around her. Much like a cat, she doesn’t just bark; she whines and chatters to get her point across. When mealtime comes around, she waits quietly for her turn, then speaks up boldly as if to say, “It’s my turn now!” She’s also a wonderfully wise friend who knows how to balance joyful play with calm, restful downtime.

With humans

Haemil welcomes everyone warmly without any shyness. When she catches your eye, she’ll strut right up to you with a curious gaze and nudge her head into your hands asking to be petted, and it’s impossible not to smile. Haemil can get a bit scared, however, if someone touches her too forcefully, she may bark due to being so startled, with her little heart probably pounding. When meeting Haemil, please approach her gently and calmly. Once she feels safe, she’ll quickly warm up and show you all her adorable charms.

With dogs

Haemil generally gets along well with other dogs. Rather than running and playing with other dogs, she tends to do her own thing and enjoy her time at her own pace. However, she can feel overwhelmed by dogs who approach her too actively, so please keep an eye on her when she’s meeting new friends.

Energy level

Haemil is a true energizer! She absolutely loves walks, so please take her out at least twice a day, because her face just lights up with joy on every walk. After a good bout of activity, she's happy to window down and enjoy some quiet time on her own.

Needs help with

Haemil prefers to go potty outdoors but can also use indoor pads without any trouble, and she walks nicely on leash. She’s one smart cookie! Please continue working on leash manners so she can enjoy safe and happy walks. Haemil is also comfortable resting in her crate, but is still a bit nervous about the crate door being closed. Gradual and patient crate training would be very beneficial for her.

Health specifics

Haemil suffered severe burns at the time of rescue but has since made a full recovery. A tumor was recently found in her stomach and successfully removed; it was confirmed to be benign, and she is recovering well.

Ideal family

Haemil is a dog who engages wholeheartedly in bonding with people and expresses her emotions openly and authentically. She is ready to return every bit of love she receives, and then some. She can manage time alone reasonably well, but would thrive most with a family that can offer her plenty of love and a relaxed, patient environment as she settles in. A family that enjoys frequent walks would be an absolutely perfect match for this walk loving girl. Despite her bold and confident appearance, Haemil has a tender and timid side. She would do best with a devoted caregiver who can recognize and nurture that softer side of her. Just as a sky clearing after rain naturally brings a smile to your face, we hope that is a family who can spend every day smiling alongside Haemil, for the rest of her life.
