Rescue story
In March 2025, WEACT rushed through the darkness before dawn after hearing that wildfires were spreading rapidly across southern Korea. With cars packed with water, food, and rescue equipment, the team headed toward Sancheong, unsure of how far the flames would spread. From that day on, the fire continued to spread relentlessly through Uiseong and other places. Some dogs were able to run when the flames approached. Others, still tied to their leashes, could not. Unable to escape, they stood frozen in the intense heat, trapped where they were. Even the dogs that managed to flee collapsed from severe burns after enduring the unbearable temperatures. The dogs rescued from the Gyeongbuk wildfires survived just steps away from death, but many were left with deep physical and emotional scars. It was in the midst of this devastation that we met Onyx. Despite everything he endured, Onyx survived. Today, he is learning what safety feels like, discovering that gentle hands exist, and beginning to believe that life can be warm again. He is now waiting for a family who will never let him face fear alone again.
Personality
Meet Onyx, a dog with jewel-like, translucent amber eyes that instantly draw you in. Onyx has a mature and steady personality. He isn’t afraid to gently correct rude dogs with a firm growl, teaching them proper manners. With people he loves, however, Onyx is the picture of perfect courtesy—expressing his affection with calm, respectful charm. He is truly a well-mannered gentleman, earning full marks in both heart and behavior.
With humans
Onyx truly loves people and is happy to be petted by anyone who approaches him. However, rather than rushing up to seek attention, he tends to quietly come over on his own–leaning in, sitting close, or making gentle eye contact to show his affection subtly. He enjoys calm, deep connections with people, and values meaningful, peaceful bonding.
With dogs
Onyx gets along well with other dogs. At first, he tends to observe from a distance and gets along well with dogs who respect appropriate boundaries. However, he may give a warning growl to dogs that rush at him rudely or interfere too much, and if such behavior continues, it could potentially lead to conflict. Additionally, he may show mild jealousy when another dog receives affection from people. In these situations, gentle redirection and mindful supervision are recommended.
Energy level
Onyx isn’t especially drawn to high-energy play or intense activities. As long as he has meaningful time to connect and bond with people, a single daily walk should be more than enough for him.
Needs help with
Onyx is intelligent and responsive. He willingly enters his crate when called and remains calm during grooming. He prefers outdoor potty and does not currently use indoor potty pads.
Health specifics
Onyx is currently in good health. He did test positive for heartworm upon rescue but has completed his treatment.
Ideal family
Onyx is looking for a calm, emotionally present family who values deep connection over constant activity. He can live in an apartment or a house but would do best as the only dog, allowing him to fully bond with his family. A home that offers time, patience, and genuine affection will allow Onyx to finally rest and feel secure after everything he has endured.
