Rescue story
In March 2025, WEACT rushed through the darkness before dawn after hearing that wildfires were spreading rapidly across southern Korea. With cars packed with water, food, and rescue equipment, the team headed toward Sancheong, unsure of how far the flames would spread. From that day on, the fire continued to spread relentlessly through Uiseong and other places. Some dogs were able to run when the flames approached. Others, still tied to their leashes, could not. Unable to escape, they stood frozen in the intense heat, trapped where they were. Even the dogs that managed to flee collapsed from severe burns after enduring the unbearable temperatures. The dogs rescued from the Gyeongbuk wildfires survived just steps away from death, but many were left with deep physical and emotional scars. It was in the midst of this devastation that we met Pongdang. Despite everything he endured, Pongdang survived. Today, he is learning what safety feels like, discovering that gentle hands exist, and beginning to believe that life can be warm again. He is now waiting for a family who will never let him face fear alone again.
Personality
Meet brave boy Pongdang! This little guy dashes across the playground with so much fun, and the moment he senses someone nearby, he runs to the door and peeks out with his curious little face. The days when Pongdang sat alone in the corner of the adoption center like a quiet little statue are long gone. Now, just a simple greeting is enough for him to trot over, ready for gentle pets and affection. Pongdang used to be quite sensitive and shy. However, desensitization training through nosework enrichment exercises, delicious meals, and plenty of love-filled strokes have helped him blossom into the brave boy he is today.
With humans
Pongdang enjoys people’s affection and happily comes over when his name is called, asking for gentle pets. He will feel safe and befriend you quickly as long as you avoid sudden movements.
With dogs
Pongdang is more independent and enjoys having his own space, but he gets along well with other dogs and shows no issues in shared environments.
Energy level
Pongdang has a well-balanced energy level, enjoying both rest and leisurely walks. He loves taking his time on walks, eagerly sniffing his surroundings and exploring the world with gentle curiosity. One or more calm daily walks that allow him to move at his own pace suit him perfectly.
Needs help with
Pongdang is smart and learns quickly. He still needs continued indoor potty pad training but given his progress with leash and crate training, he’ll do great with consistent guidance.
Health specifics
Pongdang has some respiratory sensitivity due to smoke exposure from the wildfire. He is currently receiving supportive care, including nebulizer treatments at our adoption center, to help stabilize his breathing. Therefore, long or strenuous exercise may still be too much for him. It is recommended that his walks and outdoor activities be increased gradually at a comfortable pace. He tested positive for heartworm at the time of rescue but has completed treatment.
Ideal family
Pongdang is now learning to greet people with joy, so a bright and cheerful family who can start each day with a happy “Good morning!” would be a perfect match for him. Because he loves receiving affection, a family that enjoys physical closeness and plenty of cuddles would make him especially happy. Rather than an active, high-energy household, Pongdang will do best in a calm and relaxed home environment where he can settle in at his own pace. After overcoming so many hardships on his own, he is now waiting for a gentle family who can show him just how warm, safe, and comforting a true home can be.
